       Program Specifics     

 

 

The Hispanic Leaders in Agriculture and the Environment program offers M.S. and Ph.D. Graduate Assistantships at five partner universities to increase Hispanic leaders in governmental and non-governmental organizations, colleges and universities, and private industries related to "agriculture and the environment."

Note: This program is not restricted to Hispanics, other underrepresented groups, e.g., African-Americans and Whites with experience and special interest in working with Hispanics are invited to apply and have and will continue to be accepted in the program.

Approach

(a) Graduate Courses, (b) Research that links the university with Hispanic communities, (c) Policy Analysis Capacity Building to enable Fellows to analyze policy to make adjustments in policies, traditions, and programs to improve access to programs related to agriculture and the environment by Hispanic Americans, and (c) Leadership Development – to hone or develop leadership skills that young professionals will need to become active and influential participants in their professions

Requirements

(a) admittance to a M.S. or Ph.D. program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; (b) completed undergraduate degree for M.S. studies or completed master’s degree for Ph.D. studies; (d) U.S. Citizen; (e) full-time student; (f) participate in orientation, policy analysis, leadership development, research-sharing,  and funding for research workshops, natural resources field trip, and meetings with National Advisory Board; (g) link research with a Texas or U. S. Hispanic community, and (h) submit annual progress reports

Program Provisions 

For M.S. studies,  at least $25,000 per year for two years, in combinations of graduate assistantships, tuition and fees, and living expenses, depending on various sources of funding

For Ph.D. studies,  at least $30,000 per year for  three 3 years, in combinations of graduate assistantships, tuition and fees support, and living expenses , depending on various sources of funding

Ph.D. studies for four years, if students go from B.S. to Ph.D. program or if start in M.S. program and change to Ph.D. program during the first year of M.S. studies

If students  participate in a paid internship for a summer or a semester, the total two- or three-year period may be extended by one semester

Students that complete an M.S. through this program may not continue immediately into a Ph.D. program and be sponsored through this program

Research support, $1,000 per year (to link with a Hispanic community)

Program will provide travel, lodging, and meals for all required activities

Employing organizations may sponsor students, program will provide support for tuition, fees, and books

Most required program activities for both M.S. and Ph.D. students will be completed in first two years. In third year Ph.D. students will only be required to participate in a meeting with the National Advisory Board and a  research-sharing workshop

 

Funding 

Cost-sharing by receiving department required

Maximum available from HLAE is $12,500 per year for two years for M.S. studies and $5,000 per year  for three years for Ph.D. studies, plus $1,000 per year to link research with a Hispanic community.

Preference given to applicants whose departments offer greater amount of cost-share.
